Premnas Biaculeatus, commonly known as the spiked Anemonefish or Maroon Clownfish, is a species of Anemonefish native to the Indo-Pacific region.

Normally, Maroon Clownfish vary in color from bright red to dark maroon, with three narrow white stripes. The gold color of the stripes typically does not develop until the fish are about 9-12 months old. They will develop the gold color in time, starting with the head stripe. 

Maroon Clownfish typically reach about 6 inches in length and can be comfortably housed in aquariums 30 gallon or larger. They originate from tropical coral reefs, thus will require live rock or other aqua-scaping to provide them with adequate caves and crevices to retreat to when they feel threatened.

Like all anemonefishes it forms a symbiotic mutualism with sea anemones and is unaffected by the stinging tentacles of the host anemone.

Maroon Clownfish are easy to keep in aquariums, although they do not get along with each other. They aren’t aggressive and won’t attack, but they will defend themselves if under attack by nudging or biting an intruder that comes into their territory. They can tolerate some moderately aggressive tankmates such as large wrasses or larger damsels if enough hiding places are provided for them. Tend to become more aggressive when they have an anemone or when they are laying eggs. Clownfish are reef safe and can be kept with peaceful invertebrates and corals, and most clowns will host an anemone present in the tank.

This species can change gender, male to female, where normally the female is the bigger. They are monogamous, but one male can mate with more than one female.

Maroon Clownfish have a varied and omnivorous diet. The Maroon Clownfish diet consists of almost any meaty food items and herbivore preparations.
