The Angulatus Flasher Wrasse (Paracheilinus Angulatus) is also sometimes known as the Lyretail Flasher Wrasse for the pointed lyretail shape of its caudal (tail) fin. The dorsal and anal fins are also pointed and without fringe. Males are normally more eye catching and may have longer filaments on their dorsal fin. They are brightly colored fish, exhibiting red, blue, and orange coloration. Their body and head is normally orange in color, becoming paler on the ventral side. There are seven stripes on the body, violet to red in color. The males are slightly larger and females are paler. As adults Royal Flasher Wrasse can reach up to 3 inches in length.
The Angulatus Flasher Wrasse is a very peaceful and active fish that will bring both color and movement to a fish-only or reef aquarium. A well-filtered established marine aquarium, 50 gallons in size or larger that is generously aquascaped with rockwork provides an excellent home. These fish are known jumpers, so the tank should be covered at all times.
They are peaceful and a little shy and therefore shouldn't be kept with aggressive species. The Angulatus Flasher Wrasse will not bother any corals or invertebrates making it the perfect fish for the reef aquarium.
Like all wrasses, all Angulatus Flasher Wrasse are protogynous hermaphrodites. This means they are born female and change to male as and when it is required. If you want to clearly see the flashing behavior exhibited that this genus is known for then you need to be aware that males will only display this behavior if they are in a group with a high ratio of females. Females should be planted in advance or simultaneously with the male.
In captivity it can be tricky to keep their colour and they need to be provided with a variety of high quality foods. They are not normally very choosy and eat most foods, although it can take a day or two before they start eating, when they are first introduced. The diet of the Angulatus Flasher Wrasse should include vitamin-enriched frozen mysis shrimp, vitamin enriched frozen brine shrimp, and other meaty foods along with a high quality marine flake and marine pellet food.
