Lyretail Damsel (Neopomacentrus Azysron) is a beautiful addition to reef tanks. This species is an exceptionally hardy saltwater fish and makes an excellent beginner fish.
Dark blue-grey to brown body with yellow tail and yellow rearmost section of dorsal fin. The Lyretail can develop long, elegant streamers as the fish matures.
The typical adult size is only around 2" in length, so they can be kept in smaller tanks around 40 gallons or more. Should be given wide-open swimming areas, as they are open water swimmers almost always in the upper aquarium areas, and non-aggressive tankmates. Should also have hiding places, as they are shy and can be picked on by slightly aggressive tankmates.
These damsels can be aggressive towards smaller fish in the damselfish family but tend to be peaceful towards larger species. Lyretail Damselfish are reef safe and will not eat ornamental shrimps, corals, clams, or invertebrates. As with all species in this genus, quite hardy, peaceful, and better maintained in small groups of at least five to seven members.
As to diet, will eat most regular aquarium foods, e.g., live fortified brine shrimp and/or finely chopped various frozen or fresh meaty foods such as mysis, squid, fish flesh, shrimp, clam, etc., and plant material, e.g., flake foods, especially those containing Spirulina and should be offered several times daily.
