Black Longnose Tang (Zebrasoma Rostratum), the Longnose Surgeonfish or Black Tang, is a marine reef tang in the fish family Acanthuridae.

The color of the body of Zebrasoma Rostratum is completely black or a very intense and dark brown color. It stands out from its black body only the scalpel which is white, and in some specimens there may be a thin white line at the base of the dorsal fin. This Black Tang is about five to eight inches in length. Male specimens tend to be larger than females.

A 180 gallon or larger aquarium is necessary to provide plenty of swimming room. Place large amounts of live rock in the aquarium to provide algae and spots for sleep and shelter.

It should be the only Tang in the community tank and should be the last fish added to the aquarium. Like other tangs, these can be aggressive towards other fish that look similar. Tankmates should be non-fin-nipping species and quite peaceful, as those in this genus have large fins that make good targets for fin-nippers. Zebrasoma Rostratum can be kept in an aquarium with invertebrates, which it does not cause any harm.

The Zebrasoma Rostratum is not propagated under aquarium conditions.

In the wild, Tangs spend their entire day swimming around on the reef in search of marine algae and meaty bits of food they can find. If there are insufficient algae on the rocks, it is important to feed more frequently and supplement with algae rich food e.g. Spirulina.

Although Tangs will eat meaty foods along with the other fish in the aquarium, it is important that they are offered plenty of marine based seaweed and algae. This will strengthen their immune system, reduce aggression and improve their overall health. Offer dried seaweed tied to a rock or use a veggie clip, and feed at least 3 times per week.
