The White Face Tang (Acanthurus Leucocheilus), also known as the Palelipped Surgeonfish, is one of the more aggressive tangs in the hobby.
It has a blackish-brown body with a white band across its chest and a mouth ringed with bluish-white. Has a sharp forward pointing spine on each side of the caudal peduncle, which folds into a groove. Erected when excited. Handle with care!
A 250 gallon or larger aquarium with plenty of water movement, large amounts of live rock to provide both plenty of swimming room, and territories within the live rock is necessary. Can be somewhat aggressive if maintained in an aquarium too small for its size.
These tangs are reef safe and rather passive – it will have a hard time with more aggressive fish, and it is recommended to only keep one per tank. Can be quite aggressive towards others in the family.
Although tangs will eat meaty foods along with the other fish in the aquarium, it is important that they are offered plenty of marine based seaweed and algae. This will strengthen their immune system, reduce aggression and improve their overall health. Offer dried seaweed tied to a rock or use a veggie clip, and feed at least 3 times per week.
