Allard's Clownfish (Amphiprion Allardi) or Allard's Anemonefish is a marine fish belonging to the family Pomacentridae, the clownfishes and damselfishes, from the western Indian Ocean.
The body of the Allard’s Clownfish is predominantly black with two white horizontal bands, the thicker one just behind the eye and a narrower white band with a bluish tint across the midsection of the body. The point of the nose and mouth are white and the lower mouth is yellow, below the mouth the yellow extends back down the body to the anal fin. They reach a maximum length of 14 cm (5+1⁄2 in). They are very hardy and easy to keep, great for beginner aquarists.
Allards Clownfish are one of the more sought after species, as they are relatively rare and hard to find. Clownfish are often admired when seen hosting in an anemone. Clownfish and Anemones do not need each other in order to survive or live happily. Because Anemones require intense lighting and a very stable environment in a well established reef aquarium, it is often better to choose host that requires lesser maintenance for the clownfish. Allard’s Clownfish are kept in aquariums and are reef safe, being happier if they have an anemone. If hosting in an anemone or coral, the clownfish may take food back to it's host and feed it.
They grow very well in an aquarium of at least 30 gallons, with a coral habitat. Make sure there is sufficient current. If there are no anemones around, rock formations with hiding places are needed. Though most tank mates get along, tranquil fish may well be targeted. Only keep one type of clown in your tank. Mixing clown species is not a good idea. They never hassle clams, corals, and other invertebrates.
In a group of clownfish, a strict dominance hierarchy exists. The largest and most aggressive fish is female and is found at the top. Only two clownfish, a male and a female, in a group reproduce through external fertilization. Clownfish are sequential hermaphrodites, meaning they develop into males first, and when they mature, become females.
Clownfish will accept just about any type of marine based diet you offer them. Feed a varied diet including frozen mysis shrimp, raw shrimp, silversides, flake, pellet and other commercially prepared foods. Feeding times throughout the day – Fed twice a day for mature and three to four times a day for juveniles.
