Similar in appearance to Meiacanthus Oualanensis, the breathtaking Green Canary Blenny (Meiacanthus Tongaensis) features a bright green head with a black stripe running down its dorsal fin. They have elongated slender bodies and an elongated tail.

The Canary Dog will make a beautiful addition to many aquariums. With their relatively peaceful natures and their brilliant colorings, these Blennies can make interesting captives.

It is believed that the Green Canary Blenny can be venomous, and should be treated with care when children have tank access as it might consider fingers to be an attacker and give a painful bite.

This blenny needs a minimum tank of 30 gallons with live rock for hunting and grazing in order to thrive. This allows them the opportunity to perform the natural grazing behavior they would show in the wild, and the material they glean from this rock provides an important part of the Canary Blenny's diet. They normally do well in community environments as long as plenty of space and hiding places are provided. However, they normally do not get on well with other Canary Blennies, and unless you are attempting to create a mated pair, it is advisable to keep only one of these fish per aquarium. The fish will only apply their bites when they are eaten by large fishes as they bite into the inside of the mouth of the fish, ensuring they cannot be swallowed. Canary Blennies are considered to be reef safe.

Males are generally larger than females and experience a succession of color changes when breeding.

Canary Blennies usually reproduce in pairs. Captive breeding is not widely accomplished.

The diet of the Canary Blenny should consist of finely chopped crustacean flesh, mysis and vitamin-enriched brine shrimp as well as frozen herbivore preparations. All Blennies have high metabolisms and should be fed small amounts 2-3 times daily. They will accept a wide variety of prepared foods and make themselves visible in the water column most of the time.
