The Longnose Hawkfish (Oxycirrhites Typus) is a species of marine ray-finned fish, a hawkfish belonging to the family Cirrhitidae. The Longnose Hawkfish has a wide Indo-Pacific distribution.

The Longnose Hawkfish has a white body with red striping that runs both horizontally and vertically. Superficially, hawkfishes resemble rockfish, scorpionfish, and lionfish, but they lack the prominent head spines found on members of the scorpionfish family. Longnose Hawkfish reach about 5 inches in total length. Males are often larger than females.

A 30 gallon or larger aquarium is acceptable, and should have a tight-fitting lid to prevent escape. They prefer rocky environments with crevices for concealment and algae growth for food. Even though it consumes shrimp and small fish, it makes a great reef resident in the right circumstances.

The Longnose Hawkfish is a hardy, semi-aggressive fish but other larger hawkfish will overpower it. Longnose Hawkfish get along fine with other species as long as their tankmates are larger than bite sized, though they can sometimes become territorial after being in the same system for a long time. Hawkfish should be added last to an aquarium due to their territorial nature. Be careful if you plan to keep your hawkfish in a reef system, as most have relatively large jaws and sharp teeth that are ideal for capturing crustaceans. The larger the tank you provide, the less risk there is to your reef tank.

It likes to be perch on and be camouflaged by the Red Gorgonian Sea Fan or other similar decor.  They are also prone to harm from strong stinging corals and anemones.

It is a carnivorous predator fish that needs to be fed on meat while in the aquarium setting. You can feed it foods such as live brine shrimp or even frozen foods. Don’t just feed I one particular food but balance its diet. You can offer it different types of crustaceans as these are some of the staple food that forms its natural diet in the wild. Offering it other types of smaller fish and other meaty products can also do. Like most saltwater fishes, you should feed the Longnose Hawkfish twice daily. Only give them as much food as they can consume in two-three minutes.
