Wheeleri Goby (Amblyeleotris Wheeleri), the Gorgeous prawn-goby, is a species of goby native to tropical reefs of the Indian Ocean to the western Pacific Ocean.

The Wheeler’s Shrimp Goby or Wheeler’s Watchman Goby has a whitish base color and reddish maroon bands covering its body with red iridescent spots around the head.

They have a symbiotic relationship with Alpheus Shrimps that have very little eye sight but will construct burrows for them; in return the goby will stand guard and alert the shrimp if danger is present. The Amblyeleotris Wheeleri is a great choice for smaller tanks to make interesting viewing.

The Amblyeleotris Wheeleri sifts sand in search of food and will burrow in the substrate. It should be kept in a 10 gallon or larger aquarium with a sand covered bottom to make burrows in. A substrate consisting of sand, coral pieces, shells and small pieces of broken up shells is ideal for them to dig holes in. One can also arrange rocks to enable the fish to create a hole underneath, making certain they are secure and cannot fall over.

It is peaceful and will likely only be aggressive with other watchman gobies. Small groups or pairs can be added to an aquarium as long as it is large enough and they are added simultaneously.

Fairly hardy, and highly disease resistant, the Amblyeleotris Wheeleri has been known to spawn successfully in an aquarium.

Its diet should include a variety of live and frozen brine shrimp, mysis shrimp, live worms, and prepared foods for carnivores. This fish requires feeding several times a day, especially when newly added.
