The Yellow Tang (Zebrasoma Flavescens) is a saltwater fish species of the family Acanthuridae. The Yellow Tang is also known as the Yellow Sailfin Tang or Yellow Surgeonfish.

With its oval-shaped, vibrant yellow body, Zebrasoma Flavescens brightens any marine system. Yellow tangs are named for their bright yellow coloring; the only area that is not yellow is the white spine. At night, this bright yellow color changes to a darker, grayer yellow with a white lateral line. Like other surgeonfish and tangs (Acanthuridae), yellow tangs have a white, scalpel-like spine on both sides of the tail that can be used for defense or aggression. These fish grow to an adult length of about 8”, with males being larger than females.

An aquarium made of rocks and algae will be perfect for the Yellow Tang. For best care, it should be housed in an aquarium of at least 100 gallons with ample room to swim. Don’t keep more than one tang unless you have a reasonable amount of swimming space to offer.

The Yellow Tang  are not typically aggressive towards other types of fish. If more Surgeonfish are added to the aquarium, they will establish a hierarchy. It is best to add the most aggressive species last and to ensure that there are sufficient hiding places, as they prefer to have their own individual sleeping area. This can help prevent territorial squabbles by ensuring no one has an established territory that it wants to defend from new additions. Yellow Tangs are generally considered tentatively reef safe.

They’re herbivores that don’t eat corals, although they can sometimes cause issues by using corals as their algae grazing grounds. In the aquarium, feed your yellow tang plenty of plant-based foods. Dried seaweed (nori), algae tablets, blanched veggies and spirulina flakes are all great options. You can supplement these with some meaty foods; frozen food options like mysis will be happily gobbled up. Offer dried seaweed tied to a rock or use a veggie clip, and feed at least three times per week. This will strengthen its immune system, reduce aggression and improve overall health.
