The Sailfin Tang (Zebrasoma Veliferum), also known as the Pacific Sailfin Tang, are native to waters around Indonesia, Fiji, and Sumatra. “Velifer” is the contraction of velum (“sail”) and fero (“wear”) in Latin. Thus, this impressive saltwater fish wears around a personal sail.

Zebrasoma Veliferum has an oval body shape with several bright characteristic bold markings. It is brown in color with light freckles on the nose. The body has five, vertical yellow stripes with intricate markings within each stripe. Its tail begins with bright yellow ending with blue highlights. This species tends to show great variation in color but the overall body pattern is consistent.

Its appearance can practically double in size at will by raising or lowering its tall dorsal and anal fins.As with all surgeonfish, sailfins have “scalpels” on either side of the caudal peduncle (the base of the tail). An adult Sailfin tang can reach a size of approximately 12″.

A 180 gallon or larger aquarium is necessary to provide plenty of swimming room. Add to an aquarium with ample swimming space and rocks for grazing/shelter.

Zebrasoma Veliferum may get territorial and aggressive towards similar tangs, so always use caution when keeping these fish together or with other fish that have a similar body shape or coloration. Tangs are generally community fish and get along with most other tankmates.

They’re herbivores, preferring to snack on algae throughout the marine system. Although Tangs will eat meaty foods along with the other fish in the aquarium, it is important that they are offered plenty of marine-based seaweed and algae. An herbivore diet will help strengthen the immune system, reduce aggression, and improve its overall health. Offer dried seaweed tied to a rock or use a veggie clip, and feed at least 3 times per week.
