The Golden Tiger Blenny (Escenius Segmentatus), has striking white and orange/tan striping patterns which lend its name of “tiger”. Even though this blenny can grow to be about 2" within an aquarium, they will remain peaceful and active, which makes them the ideal candidate. It is considered a hardy fish in an aquarium if given a crop of natural microalgae to feed on.
These Blennies do not normally get very big and are therefore a good choice for both small and large aquaria. It will do well in a 30 gallon or larger aquarium in a well established reef system. This blenny is best kept in tanks with plenty of live rock providing hiding places and a tank with a tightly sealed lid to prevent escapes. They can be seen perching on/in live rock and hopping across the substrate, while also grazing on algae.
Avoid larger, carnivorous or overly assertive tankmates. They should not be housed with aggressive species that may intimidate these fish into hiding. They are safe for reef tanks and will not harm most invertebrates.
The Golden Tiger Blenny is an omnivore, but one that leans towards the herbivorous side. The diet of the Golden Tiger Blenny should include vegetable matter, including frozen and dried foods containing marine and blue-green algae. It will also feed on (and help control) algae growing in the aquarium. It’s recommended to feed small portions at least twice a day.
