Maroon Clown (Premnas Biaculeatus), commonly known as spine-cheeked Anemonefish or the Maroon Clownfish, is a species of anemonefish found in the Indo-Pacific from western Indonesia to Taiwan and the Great Barrier Reef.
The Maroon Clownfish has a bold, red body color with a broad white stripe on the forehead, and white stripes on its midsection and in front of the anal fin. Every Maroon Clownfish is a one-of-a-kind fish, as no two individuals look the same. Females grow especially larger and darker than males. They can grow up to be about 6 inches. Captive bred clownfish are very hardy and durable fish making them a perfect addition for the novice or seasoned aquarist.
Best kept in tanks of at least 30 gallons, with live rock, hiding places, macroalgae, semi-aggressive tankmates, and host anemones if possible.
Clownfish are reef safe and can be kept with peaceful invertebrates and corals, and most clowns will host an anemone present in the tank. Some Clownfish only live in certain anemones. A host anemone should generally have a diameter of at least twice the length of the clownfish when introduced together. Captive-bred fish can also be less likely to use a host anemone than wild-caught fish.
Captive bred Clownfish are easy to breed in the home aquarium. When pairing this species, it's typically best to have a dramatic difference in size between the individuals. The females will be the largest of the pair, and two fish will usually stay close to each other in the aquarium.
Clownfish are generally not fussy eaters, and will accept a range of frozen and prepared foods like flakes, pellets, and frozen formulas. They can benefit from some plant matter in their diet, although they are not considered herbivores and do need some meaty foods. Feed them 2-3 times a day.
