Red Banded Snapping Shrimp (Alpheus Randalli) is a species of snapping shrimp in the family Alpheidae. It lives in the Marquesas Islands and parts of the Indian Ocean.

TheRed Banded Snapping Shrimp, also known as the Randall’s Pistol Shrimp, is easily identified by the characteristic red and white horizontal bands running the full length of its body, including the claws. The legs, however, are generally white or yellow. Like all snapping shrimps, it has one large claw that can be used to deter predators or disable potential prey. The larger claw creates a loud popping sound when opening and closing by expelling water. The expelled water can kill or stun the shrimp’s prey. 

Alpheus Randalli is a medium-sized snapping shrimp growing to about 5 centimetres (2 in) long. 

They are also known for forming symbiotic relationships with gobies - this can be an incredibly fun and rewarding relationship to watch in a home aquarium. The Gobies warn the Randalli Pistol Shrimp of predators and the Pistol Shrimp will share its food with the Gobies. 

Best maintained in reef aquariums with hiding places or fish-only aquariums with lots of live rock for protection and possibly a host goby. Red Banded Snapping Shrimp thrive in environments with sand, rock, caves, and areas of lower light. They will hang out in the lower portion of the tank, near rocks or ledges to keep out of the direct light. If in pairs, one will stand guard at the burrow while the other is inside.

It is intolerant of copper or high nitrates, but will require a correct iodine level in the water for proper molting.

Feeding this shrimp should not be a problem since they should scavenge the tank for any uneaten foods and detritus. They will accept any meaty freeze dried or frozen foods and bottom feeder tablets, as well as scavenge for algae in the aquarium.
